There are some moments in football that go down in the annals of history, great goals are usually at the top of the list. The video above is one of those moments that defined the 1974 World Cup where the Zaire player Mwepu Ilunga runs out of the free kick wall and boots the ball away. Initially put down as ill-disciplined Africans that don’t understand the rules, there were more sinister undertones to what happened that day. Rumours of threats to the players lives if they lost by more than a certain scoreline had the players scared and determined to waste as much time as possible.

A lot has changed in the world of football and African affairs, Zaire no longer exists and goes instead by the name of DR Congo. Fast forward to 2018 and remarkably, the side that only has one single World Cup appearance to their name (Germany 1974) have qualified for the grandest stage of international football. A space of 44 years is long enough!
